Orange County PHP
Rize OC offers a Partial Hospitalization Program in Orange County for adults who need structured, intensive treatment during the day while returning home or to supportive housing in the evening. PHP is often the right level of care for people who need more support than weekly outpatient therapy or IOP, but who do not require 24/7 inpatient or residential supervision.
Our Orange County PHP combines group therapy, individual therapy, psychiatric oversight, medication management when appropriate, relapse-prevention planning, trauma-informed care, and step-down planning into a full daytime treatment schedule. Clients typically attend programming five or more days per week while building the stability, coping skills, and clinical momentum needed for long-term recovery.
Rize OC serves clients throughout Lake Forest, Irvine, Mission Viejo, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Laguna Hills, Laguna Beach, Tustin, Santa Ana, San Clemente, Aliso Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, and surrounding Orange County communities.

Understanding PHP
Partial Hospitalization is a classification recognized by every major insurance provider and behavioral health licensing body — it represents the highest intensity of outpatient care available. At Rize OC, PHP delivers the full clinical breadth of residential programming in a structured daytime format.
Five to six hours of programming per day, five or more days per week, means a PHP client at Rize is receiving 25 to 30 hours of direct clinical contact every week — more than most residential programs actually deliver, when you subtract meals, sleep, and unstructured time.
The evening transition component is not a compromise — it is a clinical advantage. Returning to a real environment each evening means PHP clients practice newly learned skills in real situations, with the safety net of returning to the program the next morning to process what happened.
For clients with dual-diagnosis presentations — substance use alongside depression, trauma, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia — PHP's embedded psychiatric team provides the medication management and daily monitoring that makes comprehensive integrated treatment possible.
"PHP is not a step down from residential — for dual-diagnosis clients, it is often where the real work begins. The combination of intensive daytime programming and real-world evening application is uniquely powerful."

Quick Facts
Levels of Care
Choosing the right level of care can feel overwhelming. The simplest way to understand PHP is this: it provides the structure of full-day treatment without requiring an overnight stay.
| Level of care | Best fit | Typical structure | Overnight stay? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Residential treatment | Clients who need 24/7 structure, monitoring, or removal from an unsafe home environment | Full-time treatment and housing | Yes |
| Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) | Clients who are medically stable but need intensive daily therapy, psychiatric support, and relapse-prevention structure | Full daytime programming, usually 5 or more days per week | No |
| Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) | Clients who have more stability and can manage work, school, or family responsibilities with structured weekly support | Several therapy sessions per week | No |
| Outpatient therapy | Clients who are stable and need maintenance support, relapse-prevention planning, or ongoing individual therapy | Weekly or periodic sessions | No |
PHP may be appropriate if you recently completed detox or residential treatment, have relapsed at a lower level of care, need daily clinical structure, or are managing both substance use and mental health symptoms. Residential care may be more appropriate if you are not medically stable, are at risk of harming yourself or others, or do not have a safe evening environment.

The PHP Day
No two days are identical — programming rotates to address different therapeutic dimensions. But each day follows this intentional rhythm, balancing intensity with restoration.
Each day begins with a grounding group — mindfulness practice, intention-setting, and a brief clinical check-in to assess emotional state and goals for the day. This sets the tone and ensures the clinical team is aware of each client's starting point.
The morning's primary clinical work. Individual therapy sessions run alongside structured group therapy — covering trauma processing, CBT and DBT skill development, and evidence-based modalities such as EMDR. This is where the deepest clinical work happens.
A shared, supported meal provides nutritional restoration and an opportunity for natural peer connection in a clinical setting. Nutritional education and mindful eating practices are woven into this time.
Afternoons rotate between art therapy, somatic movement, equine-assisted therapy, meditation, yoga, and community outings. These modalities address the dimensions of healing that talk therapy alone cannot reach — the body, the creative mind, and the relational self.
Clinical Approach
Rize OC PHP integrates the most evidence-based clinical modalities available — delivered by licensed clinicians with specialized training in each approach.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — the gold-standard trauma protocol — delivered by licensed EMDR-trained therapists.
Cognitive Behavioral and Dialectical Behavior Therapy provide practical, evidence-based frameworks for changing thought patterns and emotional regulation.
Body-based approaches addressing the physiological dimension of trauma and addiction that is stored in the nervous system.
Creative modalities that allow clients to process experiences that are difficult to articulate through language alone.
Working with horses in structured, therapeutically guided sessions builds self-awareness, emotional regulation, and relational capacity.
Embedded psychiatrists manage medication, monitor co-occurring mental health conditions, and provide crisis intervention as needed.
Individualized treatment planning. Your specific modality mix is determined during intake assessment and adjusted throughout your PHP stay based on clinical progress and therapeutic response.
Candidacy
PHP is appropriate for individuals who are medically stable but require intensive daily clinical support. It may be a strong fit for someone who recently completed detox or residential treatment, has experienced relapse at a lower level of care, needs daily psychiatric or therapeutic support, or is managing both substance use and mental health symptoms.
Speak With AdmissionsClinical Safety
PHP is intensive, but it is not the right fit for every situation. A higher level of care may be recommended if someone needs medical detox, is at immediate risk of harm to self or others, requires 24/7 supervision, has unstable psychiatric symptoms that cannot be safely managed in a daytime setting, or does not have a safe place to stay outside of treatment hours.
PHP may also not be appropriate if the home environment includes active substance use, violence, severe instability, or triggers that make evening safety and sobriety difficult. In those cases, residential treatment, detox, inpatient stabilization, or structured sober living support may be a better starting point.
Rize OC's admissions team will always make a clinically appropriate recommendation, even if that means a different level of care is safer than PHP.
What We Treat
Rize OC's Partial Hospitalization Program is designed for adults with substance use concerns, mental health symptoms, or co-occurring conditions that require more structure than standard outpatient care. PHP can be especially helpful when symptoms are affecting daily functioning, relationships, work, school, sleep, emotional regulation, or relapse risk.
Every client receives an individualized clinical assessment before admission. If PHP is not the right fit, our team will recommend the level of care that best matches your safety, stability, and treatment needs. See all conditions we treat.

Step 5
You begin structured daytime programming with a clinical team that can support therapy, psychiatric oversight, medication management, relapse prevention, trauma work, and long-term recovery planning.
Insurance & Cost
Many PPO insurance plans include benefits for Partial Hospitalization Programs when PHP is clinically appropriate and medically necessary. Your exact coverage depends on your plan, deductible, out-of-pocket responsibility, network status, and authorization requirements.
Rize OC offers confidential insurance verification before admission. Our admissions team contacts your insurance provider directly, reviews your PHP benefits, and explains your estimated financial responsibility before you begin treatment. There is no obligation to enroll after verifying benefits.
Rize OC does not accept Medicaid or Medi-Cal. If your plan is not a fit, our admissions team can help you understand appropriate next steps and alternative levels of care.
The Continuum
PHP provides the intensive foundation. The work of recovery deepens and extends through the step-down levels that follow — each designed to build on the stability PHP creates.
The natural step-down from PHP — 3 to 9 hours of weekly clinical programming that integrates recovery into your daily life while maintaining work, family, and community connections.
For clients with strong stability and home support, OP provides ongoing individual therapy and relapse prevention planning at one to two sessions per week.
Continue PHP or IOP-level clinical work from anywhere in California — same clinicians, same evidence-based curriculum, delivered via secure telehealth.
Seamless step-down support. Your clinical team helps coordinate every step-down so you do not have to navigate the continuum alone.

Questions are a natural part of this process. Our admissions team is available to answer anything you don't find here.
(949)-461-2620PHP is the most intensive outpatient level of behavioral health treatment — typically 5 to 6 hours of daily clinical programming, 5 to 7 days per week. You attend structured therapy during the day and return to a sober living or home environment each evening. It provides the full clinical breadth of inpatient treatment without the around-the-clock residential component. PHP is often used as a step-down from residential treatment and can be an appropriate entry level for clients with significant co-occurring psychiatric conditions.
The primary difference is intensity and structure. PHP provides 5 to 6 hours of daily programming, typically five or more days per week — approximately 25 to 30 hours of clinical contact per week. IOP typically involves 3 to 9 hours of programming per week, usually spread across three sessions. PHP is appropriate for clients who require a higher degree of structure, psychiatric monitoring, and clinical intensity. IOP is appropriate for clients who have achieved a foundation of stability and are ready to integrate recovery more deeply into their daily lives.
The cost of PHP depends on your insurance plan, deductible, out-of-pocket responsibility, network status, and the number of treatment days authorized. Rize OC offers confidential insurance verification before admission so you can understand your estimated financial responsibility before starting care.
For clients with substance use disorders, medical detox is almost always completed before entering PHP. Detox addresses the acute physical dimension of withdrawal — it is a medical process, not a therapeutic one. PHP addresses the psychological, behavioral, and relational dimensions that require stability to engage with productively. Attempting to do deep trauma or CBT work while in acute physical withdrawal is neither safe nor effective. Our admissions team assesses each situation individually and will recommend the appropriate entry point.
Yes. Many clients enter PHP after completing medical detox. Detox helps stabilize the body during withdrawal, while PHP addresses the psychological, behavioral, emotional, and relapse-prevention work needed for ongoing recovery.
No. PHP provides intensive daytime treatment but does not include overnight hospitalization or residential housing. Clients attend structured therapy during the day and return home or to supportive sober living in the evening.
Most Rize OC PHP clients stay in one of several affiliated sober living residences close to our program site — structured, supportive, and monitored environments that provide the evening stability that complements the intensity of daytime PHP programming. Some clients with strong home support and appropriate family environments choose to return home each evening. Our clinical team will discuss what's right for your situation during the admissions assessment.
Some clients live at home during PHP if the environment is safe, stable, and supportive. Others benefit from sober living or another structured evening environment. Rize OC's clinical team discusses the safest option during admissions.
Rize OC's PHP treats a wide range of co-occurring conditions alongside substance use disorders — including depression, generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD and complex trauma, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and psychotic disorders, ADHD, social anxiety, panic disorder, and borderline personality features. Our integrated treatment model addresses both dimensions simultaneously, recognizing that treating addiction without addressing underlying mental health conditions can reduce the likelihood of lasting recovery.
PHP can be appropriate for dual diagnosis when a client is medically stable but needs structured daily treatment for both substance use and mental health symptoms. Rize OC integrates therapy, psychiatric oversight, medication management when appropriate, and relapse-prevention planning.
Yes. PHP is classified as a medically necessary, intensive behavioral health service by most major PPO insurance providers. Coverage levels vary by plan, deductible, and network status — but the majority of our clients receive meaningful insurance benefits toward PHP treatment. Our insurance verification team contacts your provider directly, determines your specific coverage, and provides a transparent breakdown of estimated out-of-pocket costs before admission. We do not accept Medicaid or Medi-Cal.
The average PHP stay at Rize OC is two to four weeks, but duration is determined entirely by clinical progress — not by insurance pre-authorization or arbitrary time limits. Our team assesses readiness to step down based on stability, skill acquisition, and clinical assessment. Some clients with complex trauma or severe co-occurring conditions benefit from longer PHP engagement before stepping down. We will always advocate for the level and duration of care that matches your clinical needs and safety.
Many clients step down from PHP to IOP, outpatient therapy, or virtual outpatient care. Step-down planning begins during PHP so the transition is structured and clinically appropriate.
Yes. Rize OC is located in Lake Forest and serves clients throughout Orange County, including Irvine, Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Tustin, Santa Ana, San Clemente, and surrounding communities.
PHP programming runs from approximately 8 AM to 3 PM, which makes evening and weekend work possible for some clients. However, PHP is an intensive level of care — most clients find that meaningful engagement with the therapeutic process requires significant mental and emotional energy. Working while in PHP is possible in some cases, particularly for executive clients with highly structured situations, but it is discussed individually during admissions. The clinical team will provide an honest assessment of what is feasible without compromising treatment.
